Walking through Rye is like walking through an English TV drama set come to life. It’s like someone has hit pause on this quaint coastal town. The cobbled lanes like Mermaid Street, are lined with Georgian and medieval timbered houses, and National Trust’s The Lamb House which was once home to novelist Henry James.
Rye is such a charming place to visit, home to cute cafes, stylish pubs and unique boutiques making it hard to leave, I definitely recommend staying in a boutique hotel or an Airbnb for the weekend.
I couldn’t help but wear my most ladylike winter attire to wander the cobbled streets of this coastal town. Although, winter is a tricky season to navigate, especially when you want to look nice but keep cosey and warm at the same time.
My number one top trick to staying true to my personal style in winter is to layer. Take your summer dresses and pull a cosey oversized knit over the top, pair with tights and ankle boots and you’ve got yourself the easiest winter outfit. It’s this trick that has got me through the winter months.
This combo of maxi dress and knit would be great for any occasion, things like meeting your girlies for coffee on a Sunday or even a cosey date night in a village pub.
Going from day to night? Lose the knit, tights and add a hint of lippy for an evening of drinks and dancing.
The Mermaid Cafe – the perfect stop for a coffee break.
Located on one of Rye’s most picturesque streets, Mermaid Street. Situated at the bottom of the hill, this cafe makes for the perfect stop to enjoy a cup of coffee with the interior being both warming and inviting. The slight seaside theme is kept stylish, not tacky, and with its weird layout, marble tables and a mix-match of cushions this cafe creates a homely atmosphere for those wanting a chance to catch up with friends in a relaxed environment.
I recommend trying one of there pastries or the sausage rolls!
This town has somehow escaped the influx of tourists and remained completely charming and I think it’s one of England’s best-kept secrets.
